What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment encompassing transparent removable aligners. These aligners are changed out every 2 weeks by you, and replaced with a new aligner that moves your teeth a little further towards a healthy position.
How does Invisalign work?
Your Invisalign aligners guide each individual tooth into a new position over the treatment period, by applying gradual pressure to the outside. When you come in for your consultation appointment, we’ll be able to show you how your teeth will move during the treatment period. This projection is possible with the state-of-the-art digital imaging software that’s used as part of the Invisalign system. This fantastic resource is great for giving patients motivation when they start their treatment, and we find it often helps people to feel excited and focused on the results.
Each couple of weeks, you will need to change your aligners over – this can be likened to coming in to have a traditional brace tightened, except it’s much more comfortable. Once your teeth have moved into a specific pre-planned position over the 2 or so week period, a new aligner will take over to continue the sequence. You won’t be able to see a significant tangible change every 2 weeks but the fact that you’re changing the aligner over is indicative of the fact that your teeth are indeed moving.
What determines the Invisalign treatment time scale?
There are several factors that can determine how quickly Invisalign delivers the desired end result. These include:
Specific case: if you have a more complex problem like an overbite or underbite, it may take a little more time to correct. Having a smaller jaw or crowded teeth can also affect the Invisalign time frame, as can having large of multiple gaps in your teeth. You can expect Invisalign to take more time if these kind of issues are present.
We will talk you through the complexity of your unique case and we’ll be able to give you an accurate treatment projection time.
How disciplined you are with your treatment: Invisalign aligners need to be worn for 22 hours each day, giving you 2 hours a day to remove them and to eat, drink and brush without them in. Consistently taking your aligners out and forgetting to put them back in may result in a longer overall treatment time, especially if you’re putting an extra hour or 2 on each day when you forget to put them back in. Putting your aligners back in after eating without brushing can also lead to a lengthier treatment, as in some cases patients may sustain cavities which will need to be treated as early as possible before treatment can continue.
Age: Invisalign is a suitable treatment for both teenagers and adults. However, your age can affect the speed at which the aligners work for your specific case. As teens are still growing, their teeth tend to move more quickly than adult’s teeth, so the overall treatment time is likely to be less months.
This said, as we’re all different, some adult patients may have the same treatment time as a teen – it’s all down to genetics.
