Dental Implants FAQs

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about dental implants. If you cannot find an answer you are looking for call us or ask one of our team directly by filling out a contact form.

We know that making the decision to have advanced dental treatment such as dental implants, is a big one to make, both financially and personally. At one80 Dental we advise any patients thinking about having this type of treatment to consider a few factors before going ahead:

  • Look carefully at the surgeons and dentists involved in implant placement; check their credentials and training, as well as the components being used and the length of available aftercare and support.
  • Do the implant surgeons make up part of the core team and are they based at the clinic to give you regular support or deal with any potential issues after surgery or leading up to it?
  • Try to visit any practices you like the look of and meet some of the staff – this will often help you to decide much more easily. Also consider if they have invested in their practice, staff and facilities.
  • Consider the available before and after images carefully. Our advice is to check if you can you see the gumline in ‘after’ images. If you can, then look to see if the artificial tooth appears to come through the gum line, like a natural tooth.

We recommend you book a free appointment with one of our dedicated treatment advisors who will discuss procedures in detail using demonstration models and imaging, so you know what to expect. They are available to help you with all aspects of treatment, from decision making to financing. • They look and feel like natural teeth – see examples of our previous work.
  • They avoid damage to your adjacent and/or remaining healthy teeth
  • They can help to improve your appearance by preserving facial features and restoring your natural smile
  • They can help to improve your overall health and wellbeing – you can enjoy a more balanced diet and can eat the food you used to love without worrying about your teeth.
  • They are fixed in place and fitted precisely meaning you can laugh and smile with total confidence
  • They prevent bone loss in the area of the missing tooth or teeth
  • They last a lifetime, if maintained correctly

Aside from the social aspects, the consequences of missing teeth (single or multiple) on your dental health can be significant.

Teeth can drift and move position in the mouth to make up for the missing teeth, resulting in a disrupted natural bite, tension headaches as well as difficulties in brushing leaving you susceptible to dental decay, gum disease or oral infections. Associated bone loss in the jaw can also occur during or just after tooth extraction, as well as natural shrinkage of bone in the area where a tooth once was.  Often in these circumstances many people rule themselves out of dental implants as a solution, as sufficient bone is crucial to the stabilisation of the implant.  At one80 Dental we can help. At one80 Dental we are passionate about dentistry and every member of the team is enthusiastic about it’s potential to improve our patient’s lives. We take a non-judgemental, empathetic and patient-centred approach. We understand that some patients may have had difficult or traumatic experiences with their dental care over the years and that this can have a negative impact on their feelings about dentistry. Everyone at one80 Dental works together to help you to reverse these feelings; we plan your care carefully and purposefully take our time to get to know you and your history, and importantly how we can help you going forwards. We are also one of the only dental practice in the UK to have an in-house dental anxiety management service which works in conjunction with our clinical care.

If the idea of making an appointment with the dentist straight away is too big a step, then we encourage you to just come in and have a free no obligation chat with one of our Treatment Advisors or even with our in-house therapists. The treatment advisors can talk you through possible treatment options and answer any immediate questions. It also gives you an opportunity to see the practice and meet the team.

We only use well researched, well respected and quality implant systems and components. Nobel Biocare is our implant system of choice and we have been using them for more than 20 years, they also offer a lifelong guarantee on all components. With more than four decades of clinical experience and over a million patients treated worldwide, statistics confirm the success rate of 95% for single teeth and close to 100% for implant bridges using Nobel Biocare implants.

Almost everyone who has lost a tooth, several teeth or even all of their teeth is a candidate for dental implants, in fact there are very few situations in which implants are not suitable. If you ruled yourself out of dental implants or have been advised that you cannot have them because you have a complex medical history, have high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis or do not have enough remaining jaw bone, then all is not lost, dental implants really could be a viable option for you. At one80 Dental we have a reputation for finding solutions, even in complicated cases. Our specialist team have a great wealth of knowledge and use advanced techniques to help give our patients the best possible outcome.

We take great care to fully assess your needs when you first visit us, using digital technology to help understand the cause of your issues; we take the time to discuss our findings in detail with you and will clearly outline the options available. Make an appointment today with our Treatment advisors to find out more and to chat about your options.

No. Our patients are often surprised at how little discomfort they experience during and after implant procedures.

The procedures can be carried out using a local anaesthetic to keep your comfortable and sedation is also available if you are concerned about any aspect of the surgery. Our team will take good care of you throughout your treatment and will listen to any worries or concerns you may have.

For routine cases, from the time of implant placement to the time of placing the replacement tooth can be somewhere between 3 – 6 months. In more complex cases involving the replacement of several teeth or bone regeneration, treatment can take longer, with some lasting up to 12 months.

We must take several factors into consideration, for example the quality of your bone, and until you have been fully assessed by our team it is difficult to give an exact timeframe.

At one80 Dental we take a phased approach to our dental implant process. We take a wide view and focus on understanding the bigger picture including how and why you have experienced tooth loss and what we can do to help you both now and in the future. Learn more about our approach to your care, and what you can expect from your dental implant journey at one80 Dental.

We provide individual treatment plans based on your individual needs.  The cost of treatment will therefore be outlined to you after your initial consultation and assessment and depending on any complexities, the costs may vary.  As a guide please visit our Fees page.

Throughout your treatment we will be clear with you about costs, what to expect and when to make payment(s). To help spread the costs for complex cases we offer individual payment plans or 0% Finance.

You should treat your implant replaced teeth as you should treat natural teeth, brushing twice a day and following instructions from your dentist or hygienist. It is also essential to attend any follow-up appointments, as well as regular check-ups and hygienist appointments. Our dental team and hygiene services have a vast amount of experience in treating patients with implants and are best placed to provide continuing advice and aftercare.  Visit our membership pages to learn more about our Implant Maintenance Plan.

An implant supported denture is an overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants. A conventional denture particularly an upper one stays in place mostly by the suction created by the palate; however, an implant supported overdenture does not need a palate to stay in place.

They are usually made for the lower jaw because conventional dentures tend to be less stable as the facial muscles naturally try to dislodge the denture, often managing to do so at the most inconvenient times.  Upper dentures tend to more stable and do not always need the extra support provided by dental implants. However, you can receive implant-supported dentures in both the upper and lower jaws.

Yes. If using overdentures as a solution, insufficient bone is not such a barrier for treatment, in many cases an overdenture is one of the best ways to combat missing teeth.

In addition, we have many techniques available at one80 Dental that can be used for patients with low levels of jawbone. We can: use shorter implants; modify the artificial ‘gums’ of the overdentures to be longer than usual and/or we can use advanced surgical techniques such as 3D bone regeneration or bone grafting to essentially rebuild your jawbone ready for receiving implants, to support fixed bridgework or individual artificial teeth.

Our specialist team will be able to provide you with all your options after your consultation with them. Give our team a call and book a free no obligation appointment with one of our Treatment Advisors who can answer questions ranging from treatment options to financing.

Some patients prefer to have fixed crown or bridgework in their mouths rather than removable overdentures. At one80 Dental, there are several alternative solutions to dentures and removable implant-supported dentures. All-on-4 being one possible alternative.

We will consider your individual needs and preferences when recommending possible solutions for you during our comprehensive planning and assessment appointments. Our specialist led team will only prescribe solutions or treatments that are appropriate for your case and they will discuss their recommendations with you at length. Learn more about our approach to your care, and what you can expect from your dental implant journey at one80 Dental.
