This Earth Day, we want to take the opportunity to reflect on our sustainability efforts, our pledge to the planet and our commitment to ‘green dentistry’.
When is Earth Day
Earth Day is held on 22nd April every year and this year (2023) it falls on a Saturday.
What is Earth Day
Earth Day is an annual celebration of the modern environmental movement, championing activists and protocols making positive change, as well as highlighting what action needs to be taken to combat the climate crisis. The day was first marked in 1970 and has since grown into a date in the global diary, with a number of environmental campaigns and initiatives based around it every year.
Our work with Ecologi
Earlier this year, we registered with social enterprise Ecologi, which aims to reduce 55 per cent of the world’s emissions by 2040 through collective action.
We committed to planting more than 100 trees every month and so far we have planted 428 trees, with 30 tonnes of carbon emissions being offset – the equivalent of 74,430 miles driven in a car, 23 long-haul flights or saving 90 square metres of sea ice!
This partnership also allows us to fund climate projects around the world, from turning methane gas into electricity in Brazil to reducing deforestation in Columbia.
Nigel Rosenbaum, Principal and Owner at one80 Dental, said: “This is a critical time for the planet, with the effects of climate change becoming ever more apparent. Sustainability is one of the highest priorities at one80 Dental and we are committed to doing what we can to reduce our environmental impact – as individuals, within the practice, and on a wider scale in the dental profession as well as through our work with Ecologi.
“Launching our green charter this year has already had a fantastic impact and we are proud of the difference we have made in just four months. This has taken our commitment to the planet to the next level and we are excited to see how many more trees can be planted, projects can be funded and emissions can be offset as we go forwards.”
How you can help
We would love your help and support with our environmental efforts and our Ecologi profile allows you to pledge a one-off donation. For every pledge made, Ecologi will plant 30 extra trees, helping us to offset more emissions and make a positive change. If you’d like to get involved, click the ‘Gift More Impact’ button on our profile.
Sustainable practices at one80 Dental
As well as our work with Ecologi, we do whatever we can to reduce our environmental impact, as we know dentistry is a practice which involves a lot of waste resources (energy, water, consumables) and single-use plastics.
This is why we try our best to minimise our waste output, with a longstanding commitment to reusing and recycling wherever possible.
We have also installed solar panels and an electric vehicle charging point here at our practice – measures which have saved almost three tonnes of CO2 in the last two years.
