Patients at one80dental will already be aware of the artist Mandy Payne (www.mandypayneart.co.uk), as she exhibits her works at the dental practice. What they may not know is that she was for many years a specialist dentist, working in the community dental services, providing specialist dental care to those patients with special needs. In fact she graduated from the University of Manchester about the same time as Nigel Rosenbaum, the principal dental surgeon at one80dental.
Mandy has now left dentistry to become a full time artist, working in Sheffield. She uses her home town as a base for her work, many pieces involving mixed media and printmaking, which depict diverse subjects such as rural landscapes in the Peak District and urban-scapes in the city centre of Sheffield.
Mandy had her first solo exhibition ‘Between Places and Spaces’, at the Tarpey Gallery, www.tarpeygallery.com, at Castle Donington – running from 26/4 – 31/5/14.
News from the private viewing, which was on Saturday evening (26th April), almost a third of the pieces for the exhibition sold. That is a fantastic result, almost unheard of in art circles. So congratulations to Mandy and to those who managed to get their hands on a unique piece of contemporary art.
The exhibitions do not stop, and Many also exhibited at the annual Sheffield and South Yorkshire Open Up, series of exhibitions. Open Up seems rather apt for a dentist, and there are at least 2 specialist dental surgeons in this year’s programme. This sees more than 100 artists in the Sheffield area, exhibiting for the 16th annual event. Details available at www.openupsheffield.co.uk, and works are available to purchase.
One of Mandy’s concrete paintings has made it through to the next stage of the John Moores Painting Prize and Exhibition which runs from 5/7/145 to 30/11/14 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
The painting Mandy had accepted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition has been featured on a BBC Arts short film based on Norman Ackroyds personal highlights of the exhibition. “Norman Ackroyd was one of the RA selectors and one of my all time art heroes! So I am both thrilled and stunned!” said Mandy.
