With Hallow’een and Bonfire Night, it’s a scary time of the year but when it comes to your teeth, what kind of things should you really be scared of?
Sugar
Because sugar is a high-energy food, when it combines with bacteria in the mouth, high levels of acid are released which can damage your tooth enamel. Those sugar-filled drinks, cakes and chocolates can be a nightmare for your mouth, and surprisingly high levels of sugar can be found even in foods that claim to be low fat, so do check those labels.
But so long as you don’t go too mad for the Trick or Treat treats and Bonfire Toffee, are extra vigilant with your teeth cleaning routine and visit your dentist and hygienist regularly the horror of tooth decay can be avoided.
Alcohol
As mentioned above, acid is to be feared and alcohol tends to contain a lot of it! So when you’re enjoying that glass of mulled wine as you watch the fireworks do take care to drink water too so the acid rinses away.

And one thing you shouldn’t be afraid of is visiting one80 Dental.
We know that the fear or inability to accept routine dental care affects approximately one-third of the adult population in the UK and as many as 10 per cent of people have a dental phobia and either avoid dentists altogether or are very distressed if they do attend an appointment.
But, by avoiding having check-ups or routine dental treatment, they are at a much higher risk of suffering gum disease and tooth loss.
Here at one80dental, all our team take great care to put patients at their ease throughout their visits, no matter how nervous they may be, with the option of sedation available where appropriate.
We also work with hugely respected behavioural psychotherapists John Davies and Victoria Moorhead who offer effective, additional behavioural therapy to help anxious patients accept routine dental care more easily and with less stress.
We are planning to hold drop-in events in the near future so you can find out more so watch this space!
